Committee Meetings: 2nd Tuesday of the month from 6:00pm till 7:00pm
General Troop Philosophy: We strive to guide Scouts to become the kind of citizens that America needs. We focus on the Scouting Aims of building moral strength and character, participating citizenship, and development of physical, mental, and emotional fitness. We utilize the 8 Scout Methods to achieve these aims. In addition, we try to make sure that all of our Scout leaders are fully trained and the Troop pays to send our qualified youth leaders to National Youth Leadership Training every year.
Troop Camping Program: Each year, in our annual planning meeting, the Scouts decide where they will camp each month. We try to camp at various types of sites to provide car camping and backpacking opportunities. We strive to engage the Scouts in a variety of activities on campouts such as Scout skills, rock climbing, mountain biking, canoeing, service projects, and good old-fashioned fun.
Equipment: The troop has a troop trailer, Dutch ovens, patrol cook boxes, tents, and nearly all of the gear that the troop and each Scout patrol will need. Each Scout provides their own personal gear such as sleeping bag, sleeping pad, mess kit, personal hygiene items, and backpack/foot locker when needed.
Weekly Meeting Emphasis: We teach the skills needed for advancement in rank, work on merit badges, and plan our campouts and other activities during our weekly meetings. And of course, we have fun! Each meeting is run by the youth Scout leaders.
Summer Camp: This year we attended Camp Strake in Coldspring, TX . Every other year, we try to go to a summer camp outside of the Sam Houston Area Council. In recent years, we have gone to Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch in the Davis Mountains of west Texas and Hale Scout Reservation in Oklahoma. Every 4th year we try to plan a Super Trip to camp out of state for all scouts who have achieved 1st Class rank. Some of these past trips include: 2001 - Washington, D.C., 2005 – Yellowstone National Park, 2009 – the Appalachian Trail, and in 2013 & 2017 Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico! Next year (2023), we have planned to attend Camp Alexander which is just outside of Lake George, CO.
Fundraising Activities: We do NOT sell popcorn. To raise funds for the troop, we participate in Flags Across Bryan. On six flag holidays throughout the year, we place flags in front of subscriber’s houses. The Scouts do not have to sell anything; the subscriptions almost sell themselves. The Scouts’ participation in this is very important since it funds our program and teaches them good citizenship. This program also provides scholarships for summer camp and other events for Scouts in need in the troop. We also participate in scanning tickets for TAMU sporting events.
Leader Training: Our Scoutmaster and Asst. Scoutmasters are fully trained according to BSA requirements and proudly display the “Trained” patch on their uniforms. All of our Scoutmasters have Wilderness First Aid and/or CPR certifications. The Scoutmaster and Asst. Scoutmasters also have a vast array of additional BSA and professional training to benefit our Scouting program. We believe that every Scout deserves a trained adult leader.
Eagle Scout History: Since its founding in 1985, Troop 977 has produced 49 Eagle Scouts with more on the way. We strive to help all Scouts achieve this high honor.
Additional Comments: Annual dues are $81 ($9 per month for each of the 9 months in the school year). Dues pay for annual national registration. There will be additional costs for Scouts to attend summer camps and a few activities throughout year, but Flags Across Bryan pays for merit and rank badges and most of our travel and weekend camping costs. We welcome Scouts of all faiths. A Scout is reverent, and in accordance with our Charter Organization, we strive to help Scouts become Godly people.
